I groan as I open the car door and pull my body to standing. I rub my eyes, so happy I ditched the contacts and shake out my legs before going to the trunk to pull out my go-bag. Every vehicle I own (even the boat and four-wheelers) has a small duffel bag stashed somewhere in them. They contain cash, clothes, one day of rations (beef jerky and a flask of Jameson, don’t give me too much credit), and a new identity.

The identity I probably won’t need just yet, but I do need the set of clothes. My suit jacket was lost to some poor male patron with a gut shot, and my pants and shirt are ruined by some lady’s blood and the remnants of what I did to Thad during his interrogation. I feel guilty for not using the Morganite knife and killing him for real since I know he’ll heal in the next couple of days. My only solace is that it will take a few days to regrow his whole fucking head.

Dick.

I knew I shouldn’t have gone to my stupid exhibit. I swear it’s the last time I let Evan talk me into anything.

I mean it this time.

Rhys has been quiet most of the drive, and it’s a blessing because I have no idea what to say to him. But it’s a curse as well due to the barbed guilt running through my veins. I’ve spent little time with him that hasn’t included me trying to rip him limb from limb, so a conversation might be impossible. I’m also a little disturbed having him so close hasn’t been the hardship I thought it would be. He’s been quiet, considerate, and he pumped the gas when we stopped because me getting out of the car would have caused a stir.

We both get out of the car and walk to the trunk, which I’ve popped with the key fob.

“You want me to carry that?” he asks, chivalrously reaching past me to lift my duffel out of the trunk. The bastard. I really wish he’d cooperate and be an asshole so I could hate him appropriately. I grind my teeth together in an attempt to avoid screaming and give a jerky nod, letting him take the bag. It takes some effort, but I gently close my trunk, careful not to hurt my baby even though I want to smash something.

I stride towards the front door behind Rhys, vigilantly trying not to stomp my feet and pout like a Goddamn toddler. My anger only grows when I notice how fucking spectacular he looks in a suit. Holy shit balls. He’s easily six foot three, maybe taller. I’m five-three on a good day, so he’s at least an entire foot taller than me. The crisp dark charcoal gray suit emphasizes the wideness of his shoulders and the line of his body as it flows from his strong neck to his lean waist and tight ass. People I hate are not supposed to be this fucking hot in a suit.

  • I’m a veteran. I served 4 years Active Duty and 2 years Reserve in the United States Air Force.
  • My favorite color is cerulean. (Yes, I know it’s pompous, and I don’t care.)
  • I hate lettuce.
  • I am actually pissy after a good workout. Like rip my shoes off and pout on the carpet, pissy. I work out at least 3-6 days a week, and throw a 2-year-old fit every single time. I hate being hot, so much.
  • I love math. I seriously considered becoming a high school math teacher when I was in college.
  • I order pizza with no cheese on it. I don't like melted cheese. I like solid cheese and liquified cheese but the in-between stringy yuck on pizza? No. But I love pizza, so I order it cheese-less. (My daughters eat it this way as well.)
  • I read obnoxiously fast. When I’m not writing or running after children, I can read about 4 books a day.
  • I suffer from RBF (Resting Bitch Face). I’m not mad. This is just how my face looks.
  • I’ve been married for almost 10 years to my awesome husband. He's put up with my picky, blunt, RBF-having self for a decade. The man deserves a medal.
  • I like to sew. And craft. And paint. And organize. And clean. I think I missed the day when they passed out left-brain, right-brain cards in school.

KEEPING THE TARNISHED
by Bradon Nave
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Publisher: Limitless Publishing
Release Date: Nov. 3, 2015
- SYNOPSIS -
Johnny Tregalis leaves home the minute he turns eighteen, but he’s the only one who knows why…

Arriving in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Johnny has nothing—not even a plan. Local veterinarian Jackson Everett notices the boy, who reminds him of his own teenage son, and offers him a bed for the night.

Meeting Jackson’s wife Graye, his son Jared, and four-year-old daughter Bryce, Johnny sees a family he could never imagine. He’d been raised by his abusive father after his mother disappeared with his younger brother, and he’s sure he’ll be packed off to a shelter in the morning. He can’t believe it when he’s invited to stay indefinitely.

Johnny refuses to discuss his traumatic past as he attempts to fit in…

The Everetts try to help the profoundly troubled teen, but he seems to be at the mercy of his own mind. He’s held captive by flashbacks, excruciating night terrors, and a mounting inability to distinguish delusion from reality. How can he possibly recover, go to school, have friends…have a life?

Physical scars only hint at deeper psychological devastation…

As the shocking truth comes to light, Johnny struggles to overcome years of abuse, poverty, and despicable horrors to become part of a real family, but is he strong enough to defeat his demons? The Everetts realize Johnny’s journey is now their own, but they face a daunting task.

How much sacrifice is too much when all you can hope for is keeping the tarnished?

- EXCERPT -
Midnight. Finally. The moments leading up to it had crawled slower than one of the maggots behind the kitchen trashcan, etching its way blindly through the coffee grounds and eggshells. He grabbed his weathered book bag full of a few clothing items and $188.00 in cash, and then stuck his leg out the window, arching his back as he felt his foot touch the ground outside. He pushed against the house, dragging his other leg across the bottom of the window frame as he lost his balance and fell backward to the ground. He didn’t care. He had been outside of this rundown shack a million times, but never had he been outside and free. Even if this freedom were short lived, and he went in the ground tomorrow, he owned it for this moment.

Quickly, he sprang to his feet, grabbed his bag, and began running in the direction of the cornfield near the end of the farmhouse drive.

The air was eerily still on this night. All was silent with the exception of a few chanting crickets and the occasional cry of the whippoorwill sounding out over the horizon. The moonlight illuminated the decrepit barn to the north of the house, as every single cornstalk in the field up ahead seemed to be reflecting the moon’s rays.

The yellow light bulb atop the wooden pole near the end of the drive was bright and buzzing in a calming manner. Several fat toads sat at the base, waiting for unfortunate insects to fall to the ground from their dizzy escapades near the globe at the top of the pole.

He ran past the half-built clubhouse his father and Uncle Doug had begun several years prior. He never understood if Doug was actually his uncle, but the men had wanted to build a ‘guy’s getaway’ for the three of them. He paid little attention to the details. He’d seen it all before hundreds of times, and he hoped to never see this place again.

Leaping over old car parts and garbage, he finally reached the corn. Although it wasn’t tall enough to hide him completely, it was all the cover he needed to make an effective escape. His heart raced wildly as he ran feverishly over the soft earth through the chest-high stalks. He began to smile through his heavy breathing, running—sprinting—excited as if he were scratching off the winning number on a substantial lottery ticket.

The prospects raced through his mind, and no adversity outside of his former confinements seemed to scare him. Starvation, disease, injury: nothing conjured concern except the idea of returning. He couldn’t go back, not now, now that a glimmer of hope had been resurrected.

As he bounded through the field like a fawn that had been mercifully released from the jaws of a predator, he felt as if he were being lifted off the ground; as if he were flying, and nothing in this world or the next could anchor him.

The taste of freedom was that of a bloodied lip, cornstalks, and the occasional mosquito; it was delicious. He knew he would leverage everything to maintain all he had in that moment, which was merely a tattered wardrobe, his father’s liquor-cash reserve, the worn clothing in the backpack, and a desperate desire to exist.

Hyper-vigilant and full of life, one would never have known only seven minutes prior he was a prisoner of technicality and his bedroom. Like a thief in the night, lowly and cunning, he darted through the cover, running on what seemed to be an endless rush of endorphins and adrenaline.
He was running for his life; this reality gave him wings.

The air was heavy and stagnant and seemed to fill his lungs with a thick, boggy perfume. He knew for certain that, if there were a higher power within the heavens, it would not have him come this far to go back. Even if he were found right now he knew he would die before he went back, and he would die a free man. Yes, a man. No longer a boy and no longer bound to his bedroom—to that shack—by the law. With a head full of dreams and the legs of a gazelle, he shot through the field, promising himself to never look back.

I can’t move. My arms, my legs, they won’t budge.
It’s pitch-black, but I think I’m inside of something. Something long and smalla capsule, maybe? Stretched out above my head, my fingers touch cold metal. Whatever I’m inside of is only as long as I am. I wouldn’t have much wiggle room, even if I could move.
I don’t know how I got here or how long I’ve been tied up. I do a quick mental scan, searching for any piece of information. Nothing. I can’t even recall my own name.
What I do know is I’m running out of oxygen. Each breath comes shorter, faster, and if I can’t control it soon, I’ll pass out before I figure out what’s going on.
I close my eyes, suck in one deep breath, and let it out through puckered lips.
Calm down.
Relax.
Slow your heart rate.
What I tell myself comes from memory, though I have no clue where it came from. Whatever it is, though, it works. Somehow, my body is trained to go into hibernation mode on mental command.
Now I need to figure out how to get out of here. With my eyes still closed, I concentrate on the smell of my prison. The more I know about this box, the better my chances are of escaping. The tang of what I inhale reminds me of burnt metal and rubber. There’s another scent too, one I can’t place, even though my brain insists I know. I dig deeper, filing through blank spaces that aren’t supposed to be empty. I probably shouldn’t be spending precious energy on it, but something tells me this strange odor is important.
Bright light pours over my face, and my eyelids fly open. Above me, sunlight streams through a circular window. I don’t know how long it will last, so I quickly confirm that I am inside some sort of capsule with silver metal walls. I also confirm that I was right earlier: the tube is small, barely big enough to fit my body. The window sits exactly six inches from the tip of my nose, though I have no idea how I know that.
I see nothing above me except blue skies. I don’t hear anything outside either.
I tug at the restraints holding me in place, but they don’t give. And then I feel something, something on the outside. The capsule I’m in is moving—upward. Shit.
Calm down. Relax. Slow your heart rate, I repeat to myself.
It’s working. My body is responding—
Until I begin to free fall.
I’m not in it for long before the tube hits water. I know it’s water because of the buoyancy of the capsule. But I know because of something else too—I feel it. Surrounding me, the water gives off its own energy, almost as if it’s surrendering to me, willing me to control it. Which makes no sense.
Above me, the sunlight begins to refract as it struggles to break through the water now covering the tiny window. That’s when I realize I’m sinking. Deeper, deeper underwater.
As the light fades, the panic inside me rises. I try the calming mantra again, but nothing happens. Drops of water fall onto my forehead. The seal around my window creaks under the pressure of the water.
I’m going to drown.
I struggle against the restraints. Twisting my body. Pulling at my wrists and ankles. I yank and kick, but it’s in vain. I’m trapped.
“Fuck!” I scream.
Water sprays in from the seal, salty like the ocean, and suddenly I register where I am—in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of South Korea. Except, I still don’t know why I’m here or how I got here.
What I do know is that this is where I’m going to die.

You’d ask what kind of psychic I am. Well, I’ll tell you: I’m the shitty kind. I see maybe ten percent of what I should, and I can’t change a fucking second of it. I see what I see, and then I brace because it’s going to happen. There isn’t a thing I can do.

Believe me, I’ve tried. It’s a waste of time, and it weighs too much on my heart.

And on my mind.

Let’s not forget about the tenuous hold I have on sanity. I just thank the universe I live alone now. How many times could I have woken a roommate, looking like a horror movie reject before I booked a one-way ticket to a padded cell? I’ve already lived through one involuntary incarceration under an insane Primary’s thumb; a repeat stay is not in my future.

I’d rather chew a bullet.

Hiding my abilities when under constant surveillance is almost impossible. I’m a Seer, born with the ability to observe things that will come to pass in vivid Technicolor inside my little noggin, hence that lovely dream. I also sometimes randomly electrocute people without meaning to. Well, sometimes I mean to, but not all the time, and that is pretty scary. If people weren’t already looking at me funny before, which they are because as a Seer, my eyes freak people way the fuck out, they would after I zapped the crap out of them randomly.

Then there’s the phasing. As a fledgling, I sometimes transitioned from my resting form to the ethereal without even trying. Meaning, when I got angry or upset, I would burst into flames, and my wings would pop out. I got angry a lot in those days.

Yes, I am a bloodthirsty little thing. No, I don’t have any problem inflicting violence when I deem it necessary. Yes, ‘when I’m pissed’ falls under the necessary column.

Okay, I should explain the eye thing. You see (pun intended) my eyes are a very pale, milky green. All the time. You remember old westerns where the old guy is blind, and he has those freaky eyes where the iris and pupil nearly blend into the sclera? Yep, you guessed it, that’s what’s going on here.

Only I’m not blind.

And I wear contacts when I go outside because if I don’t people assume I’m blind, for one, and their face says they are squicked way the hell out, for numero dos. Also, when I’m pissed they kind of, well, glow.

Like an incandescent bulb, glow.

So the fact I’m not exactly human is really fucking obvious.

Hello, my name is Aurelia Constantine, and I am a Phoenix.
